Tout le monde a ses petites habitudes, tout le monde à son hobby, tout le monde à un film préféré et tout le monde à un ensemble de connaissances plus ou moins grande dans divers sujets qui les intéréssent. Mais voilà, l’autre jour j’étais dans un cours de base de données et le prof cherchait une analogie au fait qu’on ne pouvait pas rassembler deux types de données différénts, et il faut qu’ils soient repartis sur le même domaine.
En écrivant ça, je me rends compte qu’il faut quand même donner de la profondeur au personnage; je vais donc vous décrire mon prof de base de données. Il doit avoir dans les 60/70 ans, il est pas spécialement petit mais il courbe son dos et donc ça lui en donne l’air. C’est un juif pratiquant et donc il a le petit bonnet, il porte des vêtements digne de son âge, donc un semblant de tweed avec des marceaux de cuir sur les coudes pour pas les abîmer.
ça fait tellement longtemps qu’il est là que quand il donne le cours, il cherche plus vraiment à comprendre. Il pose des questions de temps en temps et si on lui donne pas la réponse correcte, mot pour mot, il va nous regarder comme si on avait craché dans son thé. Ah oui, il utilise rarement des diapos. Tous les profs en utilisent. Sans les présentations ou les pointeurs laser, il n’y aurait pas cours à Imperial; on serait encore en train de vivre dans les arbres et de se balancer de la merde. Mais ce prof n’en utilise pas. Dans le contexte, c’est presque aussi choquant que de nous dire qu’il s’habille en femme le weekend. Certains auraient émis des hypthèses comme quoi il est trop vieux pour utiliser un diaporama, mais personnellement, je pense que c’est une ruse pour faire chier ceux qui ne prennent pas de notes. Ils sont obligés d’écouter. Bref.
Il était donc en train de chercher une analogie et tout d’un coup, il nous regarde avec des yeux de chien battu et nous demande tout doucement: “Je suppose qu’il n’y a personne qui s’intéresse aux locomotives?”. Tout le monde se regarde et puis éclate de rire.
30s plus tard, une fois le silence revenu, un mec annonce fièrement qu’il s’intérésse aux trains. Alors ils partent dans une discussion sur les différénces entre les rails des trains britanniques et les rails des trains américains, pour ensuite décider que oui, c’est une analogie potable à condition de s’intérésser aux trains.
Il y a des geeks qui s’intéréssent aux trains. On les appelle des Anorak.

Une des choses qui est bien à propose d’Imperial, c’est que assez souvent il y a des gens qui excellent dans leur domaine qui viennent visiter et faire des présentations. C’est des gens qui travaillent pour IBM, Google, Morgan-Stanley etc… Et donc c’est souvent assez intéressant. Bon, c’est sûr, parfois il faut faire le tri, il y a certains sujets qui les premières-années ne vont pas vraiment comprendre, donc c’est mieux d’aller faire autre chose. Dormir par exemple.
L’autre jour il y a quelqu’un de IBM qui est venu, je ne me rappelles plus de son nom mais il avait deux titres assez impressionnantes; Maître Inventeur et Ingénieur IBM Distingué. ça pète, non?
Bon, le sujet de sa présentation était l’intégration de l’informatique dans des services quotidiens pour rendre ces services plus intelligents. Par exemple, il a attaché un ordi à son compteur d’électricité, l’ordi relève des données toutes les 30s et les sauvegarde dans une base de données. Ces données sont ensuite publiés sur son serveur web sous la forme de statistiques. Ces statistiques sont en temps quasi-réel donc toute à droite du graphique correspond à cet instant précis (à peu près). Il a donc branché un Ambient Orb dessus qu’il a mis dans sa chambre. Plus l’orbe est rouge, plus il consomme d’électricité et donc il sait en allant se coucher si oui ou non il a laissé quoique ce soit allumé.
Il a fait plein d’autres applications comme ça, surtout dans le domaine industriel.
Par contre, comme tout geek, il a aussi fait des trucs un peu étranges, mais tellement drôles. Dans sa maison il a un problème de souris, donc il a des pièges à souris. Normale. Sauf que, si les pièges sont au grenier, le seul moyen de savoir s’ils fonctionnent c’est d’aller vérifier, et ça c’est chiant. Il a donc intégré le piège dans un circuit électrique, un circuit qui est brisé lorsque le piège se déclenche. Un ordinateur qui surveille ce petit réseau électrique détecte que le circuit est brisé et envoi un sms sur le portable.
Mais, ça ne s’arrête pas là! Le problème avec les pièges à souris, c’est que si on les laisse longtemps, le fromage se pourrit et les souris n’y toucheront pas. Le piège devient donc inutile. Encore une fois on se retrouve obligés d’aller vérifier si oui ou non le fromage s’est pourri, et le changer si nécessaire. C’est nul.
Le fromage est quelque chose d’assez ordinaire, assez humide et qui à tendance à pourrir assez vite si on le laisse au chaud. Plus le fromage pourrit, plus il y a d’humidité. Il a donc décidé de mesurer la résistivité du fromage à des intervalles pré-établies pour déterminer l’état du fromage. Une fois la résistivité passée en dessous d’un certain seuil, le fromage est considéré comme pourri et l’ordinateur lui envoie un sms disant qu’il est temps de le changer.
Même si ces applications sont un peu domestiques, c’est ce genre de truc qui m’inspire. L’intégration de l’informatique dans la vie de tous les jours pour rendre nôtre vie plus “intelligente”, c’est géniale.

Oui, les geeks en fille ça existe. Promis.
Ma copine par exemple en est une. D’un côté, trouver une fille dans le département de computation (oui, parce que “informatique”, c’est moche) qui n’est pas légèrement geek, c’est dur. Encore plus vu que les deux départements avec qui on partage le bâtiment sont ceux de la physique et des maths théoriques (par opposition aux maths pratiques, bien sûr).
C’est une relation étrange qui existe entre un geek et une geek; c’est tendre, c’est drôle, c’est fou, mais c’est aussi très … geek. Dans mes relations précédentes j’avais parfois des pensées geeks, mais je les gardais pour moi. Là je dis ce que je pense, et puis elle me dit qu’elle pensait la même chose. Normale vous dites, c’est assez courant que deux personnes qui sont dans une relation pensent la même chose au même moment, et je suis d’accord avec vous. Sauf quand les pensées sont sur le sujet d’abres d’encodage Huffman, les avantages de l’utilisation des fonctions de haut niveau ou bien encore de polymorphisme de données.
J’aime ça, c’est rafraîchissant.

Alors, me voilà désormais bien intégré dans le système Impériale (oh la blague… c’est nôtre jeu préféré que de faire des blagues nulles, mais elles sont souvent très geeks alors je vous en dispense). C’est vraiment super comme endroit, dommage que ça ne dure que 4 ans.
Les cours sont pas vraiment des cours, mais plutôt des amphis où les gens se retrouvent par hasard au même moment pour regarder un mec qui est censé être très intelligent raconter des blagues. Et puis on ressort, et on se rend compte qu’en faite on a vachement appris. C’est apprendre sans effort, ce qui me va très bien parce que j’ai jamais vraiment compris comment on combinait l’effort et l’éducation. Un mystère.
Je pensais en faite que je passerais la plupart de mon temps libre au labo en train de travailler sur les machines, mais en faite non. Mon temps libre je le passe chez moi, parce que j’ai des machines tout aussi efficaces à la maison et puis une connexion sécurisée entre mon appart et l’université.
Et puis, question devoirs, c’est assez cool comme principe, les profs nous donnent la description d’une fonction, le nom qu’elle doit porter et la forme qu’elle doit avoir et puis nous disent d’aller nous démerder. Pour rendre les devoirs ils suffit des les uploader sur le site du département informatique. Ah, le 21e siècle.
Mais Imperial ce n’est pas que le travail, ah non, je me suis aussi fait des amis. Il y a Vojtech le Czech, Till le Schleu et Paul l’anglais. Il y en a d’autres, mais c’est avec ces 3 que je passes le plupart de mon temps.
Franchement, comme je suis heureux d’avoir choisi Imperial au lieu de l’EPITA… Ce relâchement, cette indépendance… C’est fou.
Puis il y a une fille aussi… Mais ça, on verra plus tard…
